Riding the tidal wave of success that is Slumdog Millionaire, Bollywood star Anil Kapoor will be honored at next month’s Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA), it was announced this week. Also attending the seventh annual film festival as a special Guest of Honor will be Dr. Kiran Bedi, India’s first and highest-ranking woman officer of the Indian Police Service. The festival will be held from April 21st through 26th at the ArcLight Hollywood.

As part of the honor of the Bollywood legend, IFFLA will host the world premiere of the English version of Gandhi, My Father, which was produced by Kapoor and explores the cost Mahatma Gandhi’s own family bore due to his efforts to free the nation of India.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and honored that they have chosen to include my work as an actor and producer,” Kapoor said in a released statement. “With the incredible success of Slumdog Millionaire, the timing could not be better. I feel as though I have come full circle. In November, I attended the AFI FEST premiere of Slumdog Millionaire at the ArcLight Theatre. Now, some five months later, I am humbled and honored that my work as an actor and filmmaker has been chosen to receive such a fantastic tribute at the same venue.”

Making his big screen debut in 1979, Kapoor has appeared in over 100 movies prior to landing the role as game show host ‘Prem Kumar’ in Slumdog Millionaire. Other notable titles include Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Mr. India (1987), Ram Lakhan (1989), Eeshwar (1989), Taal (1999) and Pukar (2000). He is also starring in the upcoming action thriller Race 2.

In addition to paying tribute to Kapoor’s work in Bollywood, IFFLA will honor Dr. Bedi for her role in social progress in India with the documentary Yes Madam, Sir serving as the festival’s Gala presentation. A documentary movie profiling Dr. Bedi’s life and career as the first woman to join the Indian Police Service, the former professional athlete and champion of social causes will join Megan Donerman, the film’s director, for a Q&A session after the Gala screening.

“We couldn’t be more proud and excited to shine the spotlight on such striking and dynamic figures as Anil Kapoor and Dr. Kiran Bedi,” said IFFLA Festival Director Christina Marouda. “Kapoor is an accomplished artist and ambassador for the Indian filmmaking community, and Dr. Bedi is an absolute inspiration for women around the world. We are honored to place them both front and center at IFFLA this year.”
