If Viraj Shergill is oil, then Simrita Rai is water. Science has proven oil and water cannot mix. Of course, love is no friend to science.
The star of the movie he is not. He just substitutes for them right before something dangerous is about to happen during filming. Viraj is a man with swagger. He likes his job as a movie stuntman and despises commitment to women all the same. In fact, Viraj has gone on record saying women are good for just two things — making love and making love.
Living the lavish life, Viraj is an affable and gregarious stuntman who is really good at his job and is quite the womanizer. Doing an action star’s dirty work on set, he sees Simrita like he sees all women –- available for a good time and a good time only.
A snooty supermodel who likes being in-your-face with her witty quips and sarcastic mouth, Simrita is as opposed to falling in love as Viraj turns his cheek away from the opposite sex. In fact, the hardened feminist and aspiring surgeon is opposed to all things Viraj.
Too bad it is love that brought these two together -– a love both were eagerly fighting. The love in question is found between Simrita’s best friend Kamini and Viraj’s brother Lucky. With the hate between Simrita and Viraj established early on, will their butting heads interfere with the love discovered by the two people they care for the most? Will they be successful in preventing the union between Kamini and Lucky?
With an ensuing comedy of errors and a series of accidents that is a bit much, even for the most rambunctious and thrill-seeking of stuntmen, will Viraj and Simrita quit opposing each other long enough to realize their fates are forever intertwined? Placed in a position neither thought possible, the two are forced to come to terms with each other in order to live their respective lives harmoniously.
Akshay Kumar plays Viraj while Kareena Kapoor is Simrita. Both were perfectly cast, as Kumar has the personality and acting chops to play a gregarious character living in the fast lane, while Kapoor can make a great supermodel with a quick mouth and condescending attitude.
While a typical Bollywood film where true love is interfered with and another love is discovered as a result, where Kambakht Ishq stands out is its involvement with Hollywood. Not only was a portion of the film shot on location at Universal Studios and Kodak Theater –- a Bollywood first -– but several Hollywood stars have lent their names to the mega-production, including Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh, Denise Richards and Holly Valance. Other production locations included Italy and Mumbai.
Complete with the usual bells and whistles many have come to expect in Bollywood productions, including an over-the-top love story and gushing cheesiness, Kambakht Ishq separates itself from most Hindi films in its stunning action sequences and solid star factor.
Directed by Sabbir Khan, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and distributed by Eros Entertainment, Kambakht Ishq also stars Aftab Shivdasani and Amrita Arora. The film hits theaters worldwide on July 3rd.
