Some of the biggest names in international music have come together to perform in a “We are the World”-type video in an effort to promote culture unity while maintaining (and appreciating) diversity.

Citizens2_100217_350wDubbed “Citizens of the World,” the collaborative effort will feature the talents of Flying Machines, Khaled, Cheng Lin, King Sunny Ade and Kailash Kher, all of whom will be in Los Angeles between February 22nd and 26th to record a music track and film a video documentary promoting an international humanitarian vision, it was announced by Equus-World.

As part of the music video, all the featured artists will be seen performing atop the Capitol Records building in Hollywood, the publicity team associated with the collaboration said.

It was the CEO of Equus-World, Bassam Abdallah, who spearheaded the collaboration.

“Equus-World is developing a global vision,” Abdallah told Buzzine via an e-mailed statement. “Our dream is to show that the links between cultures are greater than their differences. We can create media and events that build bridges between people and societies.”

With the artists representing the countries of the United States, India, China, France, Nigeria and Algeria, “Citizens of the World” will feature vocals for audiences speaking Arabic, French, Chinese, and Indian and African languages, it was announced.

The production team also said music producer Spencer Proffer, who is taking the lead in producing the track, has already worked with Flying Machines to record the track’s foundation, with the other four artists lending their respective voices as featured or leading musicians.

As part of the collaboration, the production crew also said they will be documenting the five-day song recording for a worldwide broadcast. Filmmaker and screenwriter Harry Winer was announced as the documentary’s director.

Abdallah said the pinnacle of the collaborative performance slated to take place on the rooftop of the Capitol Records tower is fully representative of the song’s vision, which is “the U.S., Africa, China and India coming together in song at the heart of the world entertainment industry.”

In addition to Abdallah, Proffer and Winer, veteran producer Dawn Elder will also be involved with the project, it was announced.

Each of the musicians have established themselves as leading artists in their respective countries, with all of them collectively representing an estimated 73 million records sold, according to sources close to the collaboration.

Flying Machines, who made its debut in 2009, is an American band featuring a “classic, guitar-driven, hyper-melodic sound and powerful vocals” that will “deliver the emotional force of Bassam’s vision.”

Hailing from Algeria is 30-year veteran Khaled, an Arab romantic singer who is considered the country’s “greatest singer in the rai genre.”

Also representing the African continent is King Sunny Ade of Nigeria, who reportedly pioneered the juju sound, which is “a heady mix of percussion, electric guitars, and traditional Yoruba vocal harmonies.” A 28-year music veteran, Ade is considered by many industry insiders to be among the first-ever African singers to gain a large audience in Europe and North America.

Hailing from China is new-school artist, Cheng Lin, a singer and virtuoso of the erhu (Chinese violin). She made her musical debut in 1981 at the age of 13.

Finally, Bollywood’s own Kailash Kher will represent the South Asian population on the collaborative track. The leader of a juggernaut band, Kher has produced music for many Bollywood films and has performed in 14 different languages throughout his career.
